Handel and His Rivals (1996)

30 November and 1 December 1996

King’s College, London

The theme of this third conference offered opportunities for papers on the competition and collaboration between Handel and other composers, performers and musical entrepreneurs in any of the various centres of his activity, especially Italy and England, but in the event most of the papers focused on composers and on Handel’s career in London. Nevertheless, as Berta Joncus said in her review of the conference (Newsletter, 8/1 (1997)), the papers addressed some important questions, revealed ‘some of the prejudices and shortcomings of previous studies’ and demonstrated ‘the new perspectives to be gained through modern research’.
